Dancewave’s Kids Cafe Festival combines outstanding arts performances with educational workshops for both children and adults. KC Festival, hosted by renowned artists, promotes the creation of works by and for children and includes many diverse styles of dance, music and theater. Recent KC Festival hosts, for example, include HipHop artists Rennie Harris PureMovement, Afro-Brazilian dance and music ensemble OGANS, washboard and blues band, PorkChop, young dancers from Berlin and Frankfurt, Germany, and Peter Pucci Plus Dancers performing Pucci: Sport. Now in its fourteenth year, KC Festival has presented over 150 organizations from NYC and beyond, serving over 7,000 family audience members.

Festival Performances

Dancewave presents its 14 th annual festival featuring performances by Dancewave's Kids Company & Kids Company II as well as city youth performing ensembles (over 250 kids and teens). This year's festival celebrates Asian music and dance with special guest performances by the NY Chinese Cultural Center Dance Troupe and internationally acclaimed Japanese drumming group Taikoza .

All events will be held at the Kumble Theater, Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus, Flatbush and DeKalb Avenues

The Kids Cafe Festival , under the artistic direction of Diane Jacobowitz , celebrates 14 years producing work created by and/or for children throughout the New York City metropolitan area. The festival is a unique event that gathers young people and families from all over the city to see its lineup of talented young performers and professional guest artists. This year's Kids Cafe Festival performances are hosted by the New York Chinese Cultural Center's Dance Troupe and internationally acclaimed Japanese drumming group Taikoza . Respected instructors from our host companies will teach all the dance workshops and host both festival performances.

The New York Chinese Cultural Center (NYCCC) , a performing arts and educational organization, promotes the understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture by preserving traditional genres and nurturing innovations that reflect a dynamic and diverse cultural heritage. The NYCCC School of the Arts is the only American institution to receive the honor of representing the dance curriculum of the Beijing Dance Academy, China's premier national dance institute. Taikoza , a New York-based Japanese Taiko drum and dance ensemble, uses the deep and powerful rhythms of the Taiko drums, stringed instruments, metal percussion, and bamboo flutes to create an electrifying energy and a highly visual musical art form. Taikoza has thrilled audiences all over the world with its highly educational and artistic programs.

Kids Cafe Festival Performances are on Saturday & Sunday, February 9-10 th at 3pm at the Kumble Theater. The program includes twenty-nine works by kids and teens of all ages.

The line up of performers includes: (Saturday) Berkeley Carroll Dancers, Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School, Brighton Ballet Theater, Brooklyn Conservatory Youth Orchestra, Brooklyn Friends School Dancers, The Brooklyn Music School, Harlem School of the Arts, IS 218 Dance Team, The School at Steps, Staten Island Academy, Studio of Marilyn Klaus, Tap City Youth Ensemble, and Dancewave's Young Movers Ensemble (Sunday) The Ailey School/Professional Performing Arts School, Broadway Dance Center-Arts in Motion, Brooklyn Arts Exchange/BAXCo, Brooklyn Ballet Youth Ensemble, Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts, Life Lines Community Arts Project, Murray Street Studio, New York Chinese Cultural Center-School of the Arts, PeriChild Ensemble, PS 89 Dance Group, Rebecca Kelly Teens, and 92 nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center groups -Lindyhoppers and Fresh Y Crew. Dancewave's own Kids Company will premiere excerpts of Paul Taylor's Esplanade (1975) and Kids Company II will premiere an excerpt of 16 Stories by INSPIRIT a dance company at both weekend matinee performances.
