“It introduced me to more dance than I could even imagine. Dancewave changed the way I look and feel about dance, and pushed me to follow my own goals and dreams.”
– Dancewave Company Alumna
The Dancewave Company experience is an immersive, pre-professional modern training program for young dancers. Starting with Young Movers Ensemble for 10-13 year olds through Dance Company I (high school junior and seniors), our young dancers gain the opportunity to grow through an increasingly challenging program that incorporates modern and ballet technique classes, rehearsals with renowned choreographers, and a wide variety of exciting performing opportunities. This training provides young artists in the making with artistically substantial learning experiences while guiding their needs for individual achievement and team work building in an atmosphere of respect and open communication.
Membership in the Dancewave Companies is by audition only.
Our Dancewave Companies enjoy a rich array of opportunities to experience exemplary works of art beginning with the opportunity to learn landmark pieces of modern choreography under the mentorship of leading choreographers such as: Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Bill T. Jones, Garth Fagan, Susan Marshall, Mark Morris, Donald Byrd, Trisha Brown, Doug Varone, Lar Lubovitch, Christal Brown, Donald McKayle, Meredith Monk, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Elisa Monte, Sara Pearson/Patrick Widrig, Carla Maxwell (Limon-based), David Dorfman, Ronald K. Brown, and Andrea Miller. Our companies have been invited to perform at venues such as Governor’s Arts Awards, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Museum, Bay Street Theatre, Joyce Theatre, PS 122, The Brooklyn Children's Museum, The Kitchen, DanceNOW Festival, City Park Foundation's Summerstage and on PBS.
As a member of a Dancewave Company, dancers have the opportunity to pursue focused study in a variety of dance classes. Companies are structured in order to build upon each other with increasing expectations and benefits as dancers progress. Company members are required to participate in certain required classes and electives in addition to weekly company rehearsals. Members should expect to participate in 3 - 8 hours of class/rehearsal per week.
Dancewave's Performance Ensembles are the stepping stones towards Dance Company membership. The Ensembles also offer an opportunity to delve into other dance disciplines such as Street Jazz and Ballet and introduce dancers to the structure of the more rigorous schedule of Dance Company classes and rehearsals. Typically, an Ensemble demands a smaller time commitment and will meet once weekly with performance opportunities throughout the year.
Company members benefit from special classes and extra rehearsals. Company ballet classes give each group the chance to strengthen and build on their ballet technique as a unit. In the Modern/Choreolab classes, students develop a more sophisticated approach and depth to their modern technique, which supports the work of renowned guest choreographers. Choreolab classes guide students in learning composition and choreographing their own pieces, both individually and in groups.

One hour every month DC I members participate in our signature “Re/Group” sessions, a structured dialogue component led by a dedicated Re/Group counselor aimed at opening the parameters of self-expression, empathy, team spirit and harmony within the group. Re/group sessions occur once per month after regularly scheduled rehearsals. Participation at Re/Group sessions is mandatory for all company members.
