DANCEWAVE’S FALL
AFTERSCHOOL DANCE PROGRAM FOR KIDS
CLASSES IN MODERN, JAZZ, BALLET, HIP HOP, CHOREOGRAPHY
FALL SEMESTER BEGINS OCTOBER 5, 2005

This fall, Dancewave’s popular After School Dance Program returns, offering classes four days a week. Class offerings include ballet, jazz, modern, hip hop, African, and choreography.

Classes begin Monday, October 5, 2005; all classes take place at the Berkeley Carroll School, 181 Lincoln Place(between 7th and 8th Avenues) or at the Devi Studio, 837 Union Street(between 7th & 6th Avenues) in Park Slope. Registration is currently underway; please call Dancewave for a copy of our registration form. A limited number of scholarship options are available.

This fall, we are offering two advanced technique classes for students interested in developing
greater skills and expanding their technical range. The Advanced Modern class on Tuesdays will be taught by Michael Blake, formerly of Donald Byrd/the Group and Ballet III, an advanced level class, will be offered Saturdays at 12:15pm-1:45pm. Lastly, we are excited to offer a new Choreography class on Saturdays for students who are seriously interested in creating dances and learning the craft of choreography. Taught by master teaching artist Vicky Shick, this class will begin by learning world-renowned choreographer Trisha Brown’s Group Primary Accumulation, created in 1973 and set to music of the Grateful Dead. Later, students will have the opportunity to create their own choreography basd on Trisha Brown’s creative process. Prior approval from Dancewave is required to register for this class.

All are invited to try out our classes at our Open House, Saturday, October 1, 2005, 11am-1pm, at the Berkeley Carroll School, 181 Lincoln Place(between 7th and 8th Avenues in Park Slope). Sample classes will be offered in ballet, jazz, hip hop, and more! Special tuition discounts and packages are available for referring a friend and for registering for multiple classes. Dancewave’s Kids Company, a unique and challenging dance troupe for boys and girls 11-18 years of age, is holding auditions for new members on Saturday, October 8, 2005 at 12:15pm and Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at 4:30pm, both dates at the Berkeley Carroll School, 181 Lincoln Place.

On Sunday, January 16, 2005, members of the Gotham City Improv and Lindsay Gilmour will offer open workshops, in theater and dance disciplines respectively, teaching kids a variety of improvisation techniques and games. Workshops are age specific for children ages 6-18. The fee is $12.00 per person; for more information about workshops and the schedule, please call 718-522-4696.

The opening night Preview Performance, Friday, January 21st, 2005 at 8pm, features the Kids Company premiere performance of excerpts from Sara Pearson + Patrik Widrig’s Ordinary Festivals. Patrik Widrig will be present that evening to discuss the work and to toast Kids Company and Dancewave. The performance will also feature special guest performances by the Middle School 51 Advanced Band, Chorus and Dancers, and will be preceded by a reception and student art show at 7pm.

SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE FOR TEENS RETURNS
TO BROOKLYN
AUGUST 16-AUGUST 27, 2004

Dancewave, a non-profit arts and education organization, presents its popular Summer Dance Intensive for teens to take place at the Berkeley Carroll School, 181 Lincoln Place (between 7th and 8th Avenues) in Park Slope, Brooklyn, August 16-27th. The Summer Dance Intensive program presents a unique opportunity for teenage boys and girls (11-18 years) to learn different dance disciplines in an exciting and challenging two-week program of all day classes taught by renowned professional teachers. This year, we will also begin a special Young Dancers Program for boys and girls ages 6-9.

Class offerings this year will include ballet, hip hop, African, jazz, and modern among others. Faculty include Martha Tornay, ballet; Mirielle Radwan-Dana formerly of Mark Morris Dance Group; Alexandra Beller, formerly of Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company; Kraig Patterson, formerly of Mark Morris Dance Group; Anne-Rene Lawton, Modern Jazz; Matt Williams, ballet; Christopher Williams, modern, Rebecca Good, Yoga; Yah'Ya Kamate, African; Sherry Eyster, Tap; and Jennifer Archibald, hip hop. A full list of teachers will be available in April.

Each day, students in our Teen Program will take up to four technique classes with a break for lunch and an elective period to explore other special options such as pilates, yoga, or repertory classes. At the week’s end, students will have the opportunity to perform dances in an informal setting that they have learned in class or created on their own. Students in our Young Dancer program will take two classes each morning in Technique and Creative Movement. A snack will be provided, and friends and family will be invited to observe their young movers in class during Open Class Fridays. Scholarship opportunities are available via a June audition.

Upcoming Dancewave events include the Kids Company Spring Celebration 2004 to be held on Saturday, June 12, 8pm at the BRIC Studio. At this event, Kids Company will perform the works of renowned artists Trisha Brown, Meredith Monk, David Dorfman, Mark Morris, and Doug Varone. Kids Company will also perform in Draftwork, Danspace Project’s works-in- progress series on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at St. Mark’s Church in Manhattan.

Trisha Brown, the most widely acclaimed choreographer to emerge from the postmodern era, first came to public notice when she began showing her work with the Judson Dance Theater in the 1960s. She pushed the limits of what could be considered appropriate movement for choreography and in doing so changed modern dance forever. Meredith Monk is a composer, singer, director/choreographer and creator of new opera, musical theater works, films and installations. A pioneer in what is now called "extended vocal technique" and "interdisciplinary performance", Monk creates works that thrive at the intersection of music and movement, image and object, light and sound in an effort to discover and weave together new modes of perception.

During the last two weeks of August (August 16-27), Dancewave will once again bring the Summer Dance Intensive program for teens to Brooklyn. The Summer Dance Intensive offers interested teens the opportunity to choose up to four dance technique classes a day from a variety of styles taught by renowned professionals in the field. Auditions for talented young dancers take place in October 2004.

Kids Cafe Festival is a program of Dancewave, Inc., a not-for-profit arts and education organization founded in 1979 by Executive and Artistic Director, Diane Jacobowitz. Dancewave’s mission is to produce arts events, festivals, and educational workshops for children and young adults of all ethnicities and economic backgrounds. Through Dancewave’s programming, young people are exposed to a multitude of cultures from their local communities and around the world.

On Sunday, January 18, 2003, members of the Sandra Cameron Swing Dancers will offer open workshops, teaching kids a variety of Swing Dance forms, such as the Lindy Hop and Big Apple. Workshops are age specific for children ages 6-18. The fee is $12.00 per person; for more information about workshops and the schedule, please call 718-522-4696.

The opening night Gala Benefit Concert, Friday, January 24, 2003 at 7pm, features the Kids Company premiere performance of David Dorfman’s See Level, accompanied live by Chris Peck, composer of the original commissioned score. Mr. Dorfman will be present that evening to discuss the work and to toast Kids Company and Dancewave. The performance will also feature special guest performers and will be followed by a Swing Dance Party and silent auction for all attendees at the Mark Morris Dance Center.

Dancewave’s Kids Company is a dance troupe of teenagers selected by audition from all over New York City. This exceptional company provides a professional environment for young people that both challenges and encourages them to excel. The company works with internationally renowned American choreographers on groundbreaking work that expands the horizons of both the kids and the modern dance world. Kids Company repertoire includes works by Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, David Dorfman, Doug Varone, Bill T. Jones, and Donald Byrd. This past fall, Kids Company also had the opportunity to work with Trisha Brown, performing at the New Museum’s retrospective of her work. Company coaches are Jennifer Way-Rawe, Mirielle Radwan-Dana, Hetty King, and Diane Jacobowitz.

KIDS COMPANY AUDITIONS SET FOR OCTOBER
OPPORTUNITY FOR KIDS 11-18 TO LEARN REP BY WORLD RENOWNED CHOREOGRAPHERS

Dancewave’s Kids Company, a unique troupe for boys and girls 11-18 years of age, is holding auditions for new members on Saturday, October 11, 2003 from 3pm-5pm at the Mark Morris Dance Group Building, 3 Lafayette Avenue in downtown Brooklyn and Wednesday, October 15, 2003 from 4:30pm-6:30pm at the Berkeley Carroll School, 181 Lincoln Place (btw 7th and 8th Avenues) in Park Slope.

Kids Company’s challenging program provides young dancers with the opportunity to work with renowned choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, David Dorfman, Doug Varone, Donald Byrd, and Bill T. Jones. The Kids Company program is a full year commitment, with rehearsals each Wednesday and Saturday afternoons following a modern or ballet technique class. Prior dance experience is preferred; boys with a sports or gymnastics background are encouraged to audition. A burning desire to dance and the willingness to work hard are key. Kids Company performs regularly throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan, and has performed at such prestigious venues as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.

"The company provides a unique opportunity for kids to become familiar on a first hand basis with today’s foremost choreographers, and to learn via diverse choreographic styles," states Kids Company artistic director Diane Jacobowitz. Kids Company dancers are directed by the renowned choreographers and their company members. Kids are given the chance to watch a professional rehearsal of the same work they are learning. This fall, Kids Company is honored to be able to participate in a retrospective of the work of choreographer Trisha Brown at the New Museum in Manhattan, as well as working once more with David Dorfman Dance.

This fall, Dancewave’s popular After School Dance Program expands to offer classes five days a week. The full schedule is as follows:

(A dance class for boys with a yen to move, create, and perform)

(For young movers who want to explore new ways of moving and develop stronger dancemaking and performance skills)

The faculty of renowned professionals includes Mirielle Radwan-Dana, former member of the Mark Morris Dance Group, Sherry Eyster, artistic director of the boys’ tap company Feets of Fury, and Jennifer Archibald, of Dance Space Center. The Thursday Modern and Jazz Technique class will be taught by a series of master teaching artists in both modern and jazz. This class is designed for intermediate and advanced dancers 11-18 years old; faculty for this class will include professionals from the Mark Morris Dance Group and Dance Space Center, among others.

Dancewave invites submissions for its upcoming Kids Cafe Festival, January 24 and 25, 2004. We seek fun, innovative, and entertaining dance, theater, performance art, and musical works by children, teens, and adult artists. All submissions must be a maximum length of eight minutes.

To apply, individuals, schools, and performing groups must submit an application form, VHS videotape of work to be performed, and a SASE* (with $3 postage) by November 14, 2003 to:

Dancewave celebrates 10 years of the Kids Cafe Festival, hosted by professional dance and music artists, at the Brooklyn Music School and Playhouse, January 24 and 25 at 3pm. The Kids Cafe Festival, under the artistic direction of Diane Jacobowitz, produces the work of children/teens throughout the New York City metropolitan area as well as hosting young performers from abroad. Groups that incorporate the swing dancing theme are encouraged to participate. The Festival includes, for participating performers, a free day of swing dance workshops taught by the professional host performers a week prior to the event, on Sunday, January 18, 2003. The 10th Anniversary festivities will also include a swing dance party on Friday, January 23, 2004, following our Benefit Concert, and will feature live big band music, and a free demonstration of swing dance basics.

The Kids Cafe Festival presents a wonderful opportunity for teachers, schools, and performing troupes to network, develop new audiences, and draw community interest. Dancewave covers all production and publicity costs for the Festival. All selected performing groups pay a $10 participation fee.

Dancewave’s Kids Company, under the artistic direction of Diane Jacobowitz, presents its Spring Celebration 2003 on Thursday, May 22, 2003, 7:30pm at the Prospect Park Picnic House. Kids Company will perform its premiere of Mark Morris’ "Polka" from Grand Duo, along with Doug Varone’s Strict Love, Donald Byrd's Memories of Bittersweet Lives, and excerpts from Mark MorrisL’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato.

"Polka" becomes the third work of choreography by Mark Morris that has been staged on Kids Company. An excerpt from the larger work, Grand Duo, the piece is set to music by Lou Harrison, and premiered in February 1993. "Polka" is fast-paced, extremely musical, and full of challenging rhythms and formations. The kids were taught the work by Mark Morris Dance Group member Matthew Rose, with coaching assistance from former MMDG member Mirielle Radwan-Dana, and Mark Morris himself.

Donald Byrd’s work, Memories of Bittersweet Lives, is the first original commissioned work choreographed specifically for Kids Company, who performed the world premiere this past January at the Kids Cafe Festival. The commission was made possible by a generous grant from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Challenge Grant Program.

Kids Company, a unique dance ensemble for kids 11-18 years old, provides a professional environment for young people that both challenges and encourages them to excel. It provides exposure to world-renowned artists in dance, and gives kids the opportunity, through education, to learn a broad range of artistic processes and viewpoints. Talented boys and girls from diverse backgrounds are accepted into the program by audition.

Dancewave is proud to announce that Kids Company has been invited to perform in the Inside/Out performance series at the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Friday, June 27, 2003. During the last two weeks of August (August 18-29), Dancewave will once again bring the Summer Dance Intensive program for teens to Brooklyn. The Summer Dance Intensive offers interested teens the opportunity to choose up to four dance technique classes a day from a variety of styles taught by renowned professionals in the field.

DANCEWAVE’S POPULAR TWO-WEEK
SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE FOR TEENS RETURNS
TO BROOKLYN
AUGUST 18-AUGUST 29, 2003

Dancewave, a non-profit arts and education organization, presents its popular Summer Dance Intensive for teens to take place at the Berkeley Carroll School, 181 Lincoln Place (between 7th and 8th Avenues) in Park Slope, Brooklyn, August 18-29th. The Summer Dance Intensive program presents a unique opportunity for teenage boys and girls (11-18 years) to learn different dance disciplines in an exciting and challenging two-week program of all day classes taught by renowned professional teachers.

Class offerings this year will be ballet, hip hop, African, jazz, and modern among others. Faculty will include Martha Tornay, ballet; Paul Matteson and Jennifer Nugent of David Dorfman Dance; David Leventhal of Mark Morris Dance Group; Christina Briggs, partnering; Yah'Ya Kamate, African; and Jennifer Archibald, hip hop. A full list of teachers will be available in April.

Each day, kids will take up to four technique classes with a break for lunch and an elective period to explore other special options such as pilates, yoga, choreography, improvisation or partnering classes. At the week’s end, students will have the opportunity to perform dances in an informal setting that they have learned in class or created on their own. Scholarship opportunities will be available via an April scholarship audition.

Upcoming Dancewave events include the Kids Company Spring Celebration 2003 to be held on Thursday, May 22, 7:30pm at the Prospect Park Picnic House. At this event, Kids Company will perform the works of renowned artists Mark Morris, Doug Varone, and Donald Byrd. THE CARNEGIE CORPORATION OF NEW YORK

Dancewave, Inc., a non-profit organization under the artistic direction of Diane Jacobowitz, is pleased to announce it has been selected to be among a group of diverse artistic and cultural institutions within New York City to receive a contribution from Carnegie Corporation of New York. Dancewave will receive a one-time contribution of $25,000, made possible through a gift to the Corporation.

Carnegie Corporation of New York was created by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding." As a grantmaking foundation, the Corporation seeks to carry out Carnegie's vision of philanthropy, which he said should aim "to do real and permanent good in this world."

DONALD BYRD COMMISSIONED TO CREATE NEW
WORK ON KIDS COMPANY

Dancewave’s first commission for Kids Company will be created this season by renowned choreographer Donald Byrd. Made possible by a matching grant from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Challenge Grant Program, this is Dancewave’s first new work choreographed specifically for the members of Kids Company.

Dancewave’s Kids Company is a dance troupe of young people selected by audition from all over New York City. This unique company provides a professional environment for young dancers that both challenges them and encourages them to excel. The company works with internationally renowned American choreographers learning a repertory of famous dances. This special collaboration brings kids and artists together in a creative partnership and process that inspires them both. Kids Company repertoire includes works by Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, David Dorfman, Doug Varone, and Bill T. Jones. Company coaches are Christina Briggs, Anna Brown, Jennifer Way-Rawe, and Diane Jacobowitz.

Donald Byrd started his company, Donald Byrd/The Group, in Los Angeles in 1978, moving it to New York City in 1983 where it was based for 19 years. Since 1976, Mr. Byrd has created over eighty works for his own company; as well as for major American and international companies including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Philadanco, Cleo Parker Robinson, Phoenix Dance in Leeds, England, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Oregon Ballet Theater, among many others. Works created for Donald Byrd/The Group include The Minstrel Show, for which he won a Bessie Award in 1992, The Harlem Nutcracker, and In A Different Light: Duke Ellington. Mr. Byrd has also choreographed for numerous stage and opera productions including the New York Shakespeare Festival, as well as the Peter Sellars’ productions of Kurt Weil’s The Seven Deadly Sins, John Adams’ I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky. He has collaborated with Max Roach on many projects including the 1994 multi-media performance piece JuJu, presented at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. Mr. Byrd was recently appointed Artistic Director of Spectrum Dance Theater in Seattle, Washington and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Dance Theater Workshop.

Kids Company will sneak preview excerpts of the new Donald Byrd work-in-progress along with works by Mark Morris, David Dorfman, and Bill T. Jones at their upcoming performance in the Family, Folk, and Fairy Tales series at Tribeca Performing Arts Center, 1:30pm on December 14, 2002. The Company will also perform excerpts from Mark Morris’ L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato at the Concert for Dancers Responding to AIDS, December 7, 2002. Dancewave’s Kids Company, will perform as part of the Family, Folk, and Fairy Tale Series at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, 1:30pm, Saturday December 14, 2002. The program includes performances of Mark MorrisL’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, David Dorfman's Subverse, a solo by Kids Company member Sarah Outhwaite, Rachel List’s Lavender’s Blue, a Baroque duet, as well as a sneak preview of the newly commissioned work-in-progress by Donald Byrd.

Kids Company is a dance troupe of young people selected by audition from all over New York City. This unique company provides a professional environment for young dancers that both challenges them and encourages them to excel. The company works with internationally renowned American choreographers learning a repertory of famous dances. This special collaboration brings kids and artists together in a creative partnership and process that inspires both. Kids Company repertoire includes works by Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, David Dorfman, Doug Varone, and Bill T. Jones. Company coaches are Christina Briggs, Anna Brown, Jennifer Way-Rawe, and Diane Jacobowitz.

The Family Folk & Fairy Tales Series (FF&FT) gives different generations the opportunity to share the heritage of folklore, which is universal to all cultures. Since the debut of the program in 1994, average attendance has nearly doubled, providing evidence that Tribeca PAC is fulfilling a need for family-appropriate theater based on classic literature. FF&FT’s audiences are from all boroughs and a variety of neighborhoods.

Kids Company will perform excerpts from Mark Morris’ L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato at the Concert for Dancers Responding to AIDS, 4pm, December 7, 2002. In January, Dancewave presents its 9th annual Kids Cafe Festival at 3pm, January 25 and 26, 2003, at the Brooklyn Music School and Playhouse. The opening night Gala Benefit performance Friday, January 24, 2003 at 8pm, will feature the Kids Company world premiere of Donald Byrd’s new work.
